What with all this talk about our impending doom (21 March 2014, slightly earlier, Newfoundland time) one little nugget of gleeful geekery seems to have been quietly passed over. The fact that there’s a scale evaluating the odds and damage caused by asteroid impact — the Torino Scale — is a grand and exciting thing, and the only thing wrong with it is that it’s named after a place, not a person (unlike, say, the Richter Scale).

I’d be happy if they named a scale after me — the Garcia Scale. It would probably measure the likelyhood of giant robot / mutant monster attack, with a zero being “All clear, Tokyo’s cool” to a 10, which would be “Crap! Eva Unit 01 is going all Messianic, and Godzilla’s razing San Francisco bay!”
